WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A four car collision at the intersection of Market Street and Eastwood Road killed one person and injured four others Monday night.

According to police five people were involved in the accident and one person did not survive.  Four others were injured.

Police say 68-year-old Moses P. Wheeler Jr. of Atlantic Beach drove his Jeep Cherokee into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a Chevrolet Tahoe before crashing head-on into a Chevrolet Trailblazer.  The Trailblazer was then struck from behind by a Nissan Pathfinder.

Wheeler died in the crash, and his passenger, 62-year-old Helen Cutler of Wilmington, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she is listed in serious condition, as of Tuesday morning.

The driver of the Trailblazer, 35-year-old James Rose, is also listed in serious condition at the hospital.

The drivers of the Pathfinder and Tahoe were both treated and released from Cape Fear Hospital.

Authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and are trying to determine if Wheeler suffered a medical condition.
