NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An area boating dock will shut down next week, and while many boaters say it's an inconvenience during boating season, it's one they're willing to deal with.
John Morgan took his jet ski for a spin on the Cape Fear River Monday, using the boat ramp at River Road Park. He lives just minutes away from the ramp so it's easy access, but beginning next week, that ramp will be closed until September.
"That is a bummer," said Morgan. "It seems like they would wait until the middle of winter or something to do that. It'll be better as far as installing the dock and all."
Morgan said the positive outcomes of the project could out-weigh the bad.
"Walking and getting in and out of the boat, no long parking, concrete instead of sand," said Morgan describing what renovations are in store for the ramp.
The ramp will be blocked off Monday, July 6 to allow county officials to make improvements to the fishing pier and to the dirt boat ramp.
"The pier will be extended by 100 feet, so that we'll be able to get into deeper water," said New Hanover County spokesman Mark Boyer. "They'll install a concrete boat here instead of this mud ramp that goes into the Cape Fear River."
Resident Maraya Slatter said the improvements will allow her to fish at any time and could help her reel in more fish.
"If this gets improves and goes outwards then you'll be closer to where it's deep and where most of the fish are," said Slatter.
Boyer said new landscaping will come to the park and lights will be installed at the new pier so people can fish at night.
