HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) - Firefighters in Hampstead are teaching kids how to stay safe from fires.

The volunteer firefighters at Sloop Point Fire Department held their first ever "future firefighters" camp.  They said they got the idea from firefighters in another part of the state, and decided to bring the camp to Hampstead.

"Down the road when they grow up they might be a little more interested in it," said Captain Ryan Johnston with the Sloop Point Fire Department. "Just trying to keep our future alive and enjoying being in the fire service."

30 kids ages 7 to 11 attended. Sloop Point Firefighters said they are going to prepare for a bigger camp next summer.
