WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Human Relations Department is on schedule to close its doors at the end of the month, but if one if one city council member has his way, a new one could be on the way.

Officials decided to shut down the Human Relations Department in an effort to save money.

AT the next Wilmington council meeting, council member Ronald Sparks will propose a new Human Relations Department run by volunteers.

"Back during 1968 when we were having all the riots and things here in Wilmington, the human relations commission, our human relations commission, was the only place where the Ku Klux Klan and the NAACP could sit at the same table and a fight not break out," said Sparks.

Sparks is one of many community leaders who have come out against eliminating the Human Relations Department.

District Attorney Ben David has written a letter to the county commissioners supporting the department.
