NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A con artist is preying on the generosity of veterans and their families by posing as VFW members, asking for donations over the phone.
The Wilmington Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars said they have been receiving reports from people who were scammed in our area. They say they have received phone calls asking for financial assistance for the Wilmington Post.
According to employee Fred Gainey, the VFW does not usually ask for donations over the phone and doesn't want anyone to fall victim to this scam.
"It's the economy - it's the times," said Gainey. "This happens every couple years, I think not just with the VFW but with other organizations. It's just people out there taking advantage of other people."
Gainey is asking anyone with information on who the con artist is or have fallen victim to the scam, to call the local chapter.
