WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - I must admit I don't completely know what to make of what's going on in Iran.
When the protests and violence started my mind just kind of dismissed it as being part of a culture and place I don't really understand, so my mind went on to other things.
I started thinking about an upcoming vacation and how our family would be getting together for the 4th, and then I stopped and started thinking about the meaning of Independence Day and suddenly my mind went back to Iran.
These images are not easy to look at, and yet when we do, we realize how much - as Americans- we take for granted.
Why are these people protesting? Because all they really want is to be self-governed - the right to choose their own leaders and enjoy the many freedoms we already have. And because of this, they are the victims of a brutal crackdown.
I still don't understand everything that goes on in that part world, and I probably never will.
But I'm not going to just ignore and discard these events. In fact, next weekend when I celebrate Independence Day, the people of Iran will be in my thoughts and prayers.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
