NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A woman who lives in an apartment along Masonboro Loop road is concerned about what appears to be some sort of fungus growing on her property.
Annette Spake discovered a yellow material outside her apartment Monday night at the Masonboro Lodge.
She didn't know what it was and put some mulch over it. According to Spake, the substance had completely grown over the mulch in just twenty minutes.
Officials say the substance could be construction paste since there is building underway at the unit, but Spake is still worried.
"It was kind of scary," said Spake. "I have a little girl. I have a dog. I don't know if it's dangerous, what's going on or what?"
Spake said the substance has not grown anymore since Monday night and appears to have hardened.
Several viewers have emailed saying the "mystery yellow material" could be a fungus called fuligo septica, or more commonly "dog vomit slime mold."
According to a website from the University of Wisconsin, there's no way to get rid of the mold, but it is not a danger to humans or animals who inhale it.
