WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Some kids in Wilmington are saving lives by taking one lap at a time.
The Wilmington Swim League had its first Swim for Cancer fundraiser Monday, where swimmers were sponsored for each lap they swam.
All proceeds benefit Relay for Life, an organization that raises money to fight cancers.
Nine of the ten Wilmington Swim League teams are participating in the event, with between 800-1,000 swimmers ranging in ages 4-18.
"We thought a swim for cancer would be a great way to go for our swim league so we wanted to do something for our community as well as for a worthy cause," said Pine Valley Country Club Swim Coach Jennifer Short. "We swim, so we swim for cancer."
This event is being held at several locations:
- Pine Valley Country Club
- Cape Fear Country Club
- Country Club of Landfall
- Echo Farms Country Club
- Southport Marlins Swim Team
- Holly Tree Racquet Club
- Southside Sting Rays (Legion Stadium, City team)
Each swimmer is hoping to raise $100. If you would like to donate to a team, click here, collections will be accepted through August.
