BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Crews will break ground Friday evening for a new fire station in Southport.
The station will be built across the street from Dosher Memorial Hospital, where a pharmacy used to sit.
The new station will have a larger sleeping area for firefighters, a kitchen, and will have enough room for an emergency operation center.
"Well, we need to be centrally located, and to keep up with our certification," said Greg Cumbee with the Southport Fire Department. "One of the things the state suggested for the Fire Marshal's Office is that we build another station out in the middle of town, so that we can cover our districts. This is not just a city fire department. We're also for the district. We have an area that we have to cover in five miles, so we need to get more centrally located."
The ground breaking will take place at 5:00, and construction is expected to take about a year.
