BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT)- After receiving complaints from the community and performing an undercover investigation, the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office set up a sting last month to stop prostitution in their county.
Deputies went to four strip clubs and spas: Close Encounters, Playmates, Sun Spa and Smile Spa. The raids ended with a dozen girls arrested for soliciting prostitution and one for an illegal massage.
According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office managers from Sun Spa and Smile Spa were charged with maintaining a place of prostitution and aid and abet prostitution.
Other charges including sell and delivery of Xanax and sell and of delivery of hydrocodone, large amounts of evidence was recovered from the scenes including paraphernalia and evidence of the acts on video.
The operation included undercover detectives and officers from the Greensboro Police Department and the Shallotte Police Department. The teams searching the premises were able to uncover over $50,000.
"I hope this sends a clear message to those people that are frequenting these establishments," said Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram. "We are going to be there and enforcing the law and aggressively trying to shut these places down."
John Young, who works and frequents Close Encounters, said he doesn't think illegal activity happens at the strip club.
"We check the VIP rooms and all that stuff," said Young. "If a girl goes we'll go back there. If we find any condom wrappers or anything like that we fire the girl."
Sheriff Ingram said they've had numerous complaints from the community that girls are soliciting sex and other illegal activities, and said their investigation is not over.
Six of the twelve women plead guilty in court for solicitation to commit prostitution and massage without a license.
