COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - One person is dead after a single engine plane went down near Chadbourn Thursday evening.

The plane crashed into a field about two miles south of Chadbourn off of Highway 410.

Columbus County Emergency Services Director Jeremy Jernigan said it happened just after 7:00 PM.  The pilot, identified as Shannon Harrelson, was killed in the crash, but no one else was on board the plane.

Nearby residents said they could hear the plane sputter before it crashed to the ground.  They say neighbors ran to help the pilot, but his injuries were too severe.

"It's terrible especially when it takes a person's life," said resident Retta McDuffie.  "He left a wife and two small children and that was awful."

The Federal Aviation Administration was at the crash scene Friday investigating the area.

The FAA has not yet released the cause of the crash.
