NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is raising public awareness about a new scam.

According to Chief Deputy Ed mcMahon, a person was contacted over the phone several days ago by someone posing as a sheriff's deputy.

The man said they had taken a co-worker of the victim into custody and needed $600 in bail money wired to Florida.  The money was claimed immediately.

Chief Deputy McMahon said this is the only occurrence of this scam they've heard about so far, but would not be surprised if it has happened before.

"If somebody identifies themselves as a law enforcement officer, as anybody and it sounds a little suspicious or there's a question, get a number to call them back at," said McMahon.

Anyone with information on this scam is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office, (910) 341-4200.
