BOLIVIA, NC (WECT) - Tuesday night, Brunswick County Republican Party members chose a new county representative in the General Assembly.

They picked Frank Iler to take Bonner Stiller's vacant House seat.

Iler was up against Shirley Babson for the House seat. Stiller decided to step down to spend more time with his family and focus on his law firm in Southport.

Iler is the Republican chairman for the seventh congressional district in Brunswick County, and Babson is the chair of the county school board.  Both said they are close friends, but for one night only, they were rivals.

Iler won, receiving 25 of the 35 votes cast Tuesday night. Babson received the other 10.

Iler said Governor Bev Perdue could make the official appointment Wednesday morning. That means Iler could be sworn into office by Wednesday afternoon.

Iler said his main concerns in Raleigh will be education and coastal issues.

"I've been around the county the last three years talking to all kinds of folks from every party," said Iler. "I think I know the issues. Hopefully, we will be able to promote the issues of Brunswick County in Raleigh."
