NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - After serving the public for more than 39 years, New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey will retire at the end of June.

Monday night, law enforcement agencies gathered at the First Baptist Church Activity Center to honor his retirement.

The 64-year-old sheriff said he decided to bow out in the middle of his 4-year term to take advantage of a retirement incentives package offered by the county as a way to cut the budget.

Chief Deputy Ed McMahon will replace Causey when he retires.
