NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - It's one thing to find shells, sand dollars, and maybe some loose change on the beach, but it's not every day you find a message in a bottle.
Richard Vieregge stumbled across a message in a bottle while he was roaming the beach during a break from painting for Windjammer Construction.
The message was dated May 11, 2009, and was sent by some Florida residents from a boat off the Canary Islands.
"I almost walked by it and didn't think nothing about it, even though I would've picked it up to throw it away, but I got to looking at it and there was a letter in there," said Vieregge. "So, I run it back to the job and everybody was excited cause I always find something and everybody's like, 'man, what'd you find this time?' So, I broke it open and read it to everybody."
The note writers said they often send out messages to sea and have gotten replies from as far away as the British Isles.
WECT tried giving the writers a call, but haven't been able to get through.
