New Hanover Co. daycare aged child has H1N1

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An additional case of H1N1 has been confirmed in New Hanover County, bringing the total number of cases to six.

The State Laboratory of Public Health confirmed a daycare aged child has extracted the latest case of the virus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of June 4 at 11:00 AM, there have been 11,054 cases of the flu strain confirmed nationwide and 35 confirmed cases in North Carolina.

The New Hanover County Health Department is waiting for the results of a Holly Tree Elm. student, but expect to have results sometime Friday.

The health department advises people to go home at the earliest sign of illness to minimize contact in the community.

The following information provided by the health department can help residents prevent transmission of the novel H1N1 and seasonal influenza.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid close contact with those who are sick
  • Stay at home if you are sick
