NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some local students are trying to protect a species of turtles.
Fourth and fifth graders at Wrightsville Beach Elementary school presented their research Wednesday about the dangers facing Diamondback Terrapins.
The Terrapins are native to southeastern North Carolina, but often get hit by cars and caught in crab traps.
Part of the students' presentation focused on excluders, an inexpensive tool that is placed on crab traps to protect Terrapins.
The students are trying to raise money to buy those tools.
