SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Residents of Bald Head Island voted Tuesday in favor of allowing the town to spend $17 million on a beach renourishment project.
140 people voted for the plan and only 24 people voted against it.
Sand will be replaced on the south and west beaches of the island. Other projects will also be completed to fight erosion and protect beaches from hurricanes.
"Certainly, the sand management plan is very important to the island," said Bald Head Island resident Stephen Robertson. "There are major, major plans that have been put in place by the engineers representing the village, the corps of engineers that have been working with a lot of different organizations to come up with a very professional sand management plan."
