DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Duplin County school system is facing unprecedented budget cuts and massive layoffs.
Officials are trying to decide how to use county money to survive next year.
One option is to use all the money to keep basic school operations running.
Another option reportedly was to eliminate the sports program, but officials told WECT that won't happen.
"We can't afford to not have athletics in our school system whether it's football, baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis, cheerleading," said Assistant Superintendent James Bo Bullins. "We've got to have those programs and we've got to make sacrifices to make sure we have those programs, because that's the right thing to do for our kids."
School officials are predicting that layoffs will make up about 12% of their staff.
