CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) - A Chadbourn man used his profession to build his own aircraft.

Danny Long, the owner of Long's Small Engine Repair started building his own experimental aircraft a year and a half ago from a kit.  The plane was completed about a month ago. He has been flying from the landing strip in his backyard.

The plane is a Quad City Challenger II. It can travel up to 300 miles. Its speed gets up to about 100 miles per hour. Long says when he was growing up, his dream was to be a pilot for a commercial airline.

"It's been an overall joy to build it," said Long. "It's taken me a long time, about a year and about 1400 hours. A lot of taping cloth, fabric work and metal work."

Before he could travel to locations outside of Chadbourn, the Federal Aviation Administration made Long fly the plane 40 hours around town.  Long says his goal is to one day soon be able to fly cross country.
