My Turn, Your Turn: Miss USA

By Gary McNair - bio|email

WLMINGTON, NC (WECT) - I got the chance to meet Miss USA this week. Wilmington native, Kristen Dalton stopped by our station to record some public service announcements.

I've been in this business a long time and it has afforded me plenty of opportunities to meet famous people, and I must tell you, I'm very impressed with this young lady.

Think about it - since she won the crown back in April, her victory has been overshadowed by Miss California, that obnoxious judge and the issue of same sex marriage.  Through it all, Kristen Dalton has quietly shown America why she won.

This was not just a competition measured only by beauty.  For Kristen, it was more about class and grace.  That's why she truly deserves the crown and the homecoming celebrations this week.

The controversy that started at the pageant may last a little longer, but eventually it will fade away.  By that time, I think Kristen Dalton has a good chance of trading in that crown for a new one.  Could Wilmington also be home to the next Miss Universe?  I certainly hope so.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at

I just saw your commentary about Kristen Dalton and I agree with you 100 percent.  I saw an interview with her before she left for the Miss USA contest and was very impressed with her comments and responses to the questions asked by the interviewer.  I thought, "at last, someone who represents the best of the U.S. and N.C."  Not only does she have class, she is beautiful and very intelligent. I know she will make our state and country proud in the Miss Universe pageant.  Hopefully, she will get the time in the spotlight she deserves!
