NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WECT) - Along with Memorial Day, May 25 is also National Missing Children's Day.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office hosted an event to educate people about how to keep their children safe.
May 25 serves as an annual reminder to the nation to remember those children who are still missing and to make child protection a national priority.
So the sheriff's office held a "Take 25" ID event at the Walmart in Monkey Junction. During the event the sheriff's office provided child identification kits and other information.
This day also serves as a reminder to the nation to renew efforts to reunite missing children with their families.
The Crime Prevention Unit gave tips and encouraged parents and guardians to spend time talking to kids and teaching them ways to be safer.
Officers say while children face many potential risks throughout their lives, the threat can be lessened when parents and guardians teach safety concepts.
