WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Two young ladies are fighting for their lives and the community is doing its best to help them.

At Bangz Hair Salon, employees held a large yard sale to support Victoria Oliver. Oliver, a spa specialist at Bangz, was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, and has no medical insurance.

Only a mile and a half down the road, another fundraiser was being held at St. Matthews Church to support Hilary Piper. Doctors diagnosed her with refractory iron deficiency anemia three years ago.

Dozens gathered at the church for a pig-pickin lunch. Both young ladies said they can't thank their supporters enough.

"When one is down, another one lifts them up," said Victoria Oliver who is fighting leukemia. "That is exactly what bangz has done for me today."

"This is great, this is awesome," said Hilary Piper who is fighting iron deficiency anemia. "It's really good to know that all these people really do care."

Volunteers were able to raise thousands of dollars.
