CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Coast Guard has suspended the search for 19-year-old Angel Gonzalez who disappeared while swimming near Carolina Beach Saturday afternoon.

Gonzalez disappeared around 4:30 Saturday afternoon.  He was reported missing after swimming near the boardwalk at Carolina Beach. The Coast Guard worked with New Hanover County Sheriff Office, Carolina Beach Rescue, and Federal Point Fire and Rescue to try to locate the male.

Sunday, Carolina Beach lifeguards put out signs along the beach warning swimmers not to get in the water, especially during low tide, because of rip currents.

"If you find yourself in a rip current the best thing to do is to stay calm," said CPL Simon Sanders of Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue. "Swim parallel to the shore. Generally rip currents are very narrow, you can either swim north or south parallel to the shore. Make your way out of the rip current and make your way into shore."

Coast Guard boats and a helicopter crew conducted a final search before they called off their efforts Sunday afternoon.  They said rip tide warnings were in effect at the time Gonzalez disappeared.
