SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - A man has been arrested in connection to the murder of 62-year-old Gladys Myrie.

18-year-old Lee Roy Jolly Jr. was arrested and charged with first degree murder Monday evening, but additional charges are pending.

"It was found that a large amount of coins were missing from the victim's residence," said Chief Jerry Dove.  "It was later discovered the suspect has been trying to trade that money for paper money."

Authorities used that information to set up an interview with Jolly where they found evidence used in the crime.

The chief said he believes Jolly may have known his victim before the attack, but investigators are still trying to determine a motive.

Jolly's father was present at a press conference Tuesday.  He said that if his son is responsible for the crime, there has to be someone else involved.

"He's more of a follower, not a leader," said Lee Jolly Sr.  "If this took place, then there was somebody else with him.  The chief and Gary Smith need to look into it and find who else was involved."

Chief Dove said they believe they have their man, but the case remains open.

"We are still continuing our investigation," said Dove.  "We will cover all avenues."

Police told WECT they found Myrie dead on her bedroom floor Friday.

They discovered her body after relatives asked officers to check on Myrie at her home located at 307 West 11th Street.
