WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The city manager took a look at his recommended budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed budget does not include any tax increases or city job cuts, but 37 vacant positions would be eliminated.

"We've got some challenges ahead," said Mayor Bill Saffo.  "We've been able to look at the way we do business and we think we have found ways to do it much better, much more efficiently and with less people."

City council members say they are looking at a $6.5 million hole in their budget.

The proposed cuts would be capital improvements like maintenance and sidewalk repairs.  It would also include a decrease in city council's travel funds.

City council members say they are concerned how the state will balance the $4 billion shortfall.  If they choose to take money from the city, more cuts will likely be made locally.
