WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department announced Thursday that there have been no murders in the area so far this year.
By this time in last year, eight people had already died as a result of murder of violent crime. There was a total of 13 murders in 2008.
Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said these numbers mean the fight against crime is working.
"We feel pretty lucky the first five and a half months of the year," said Evangelous. "Think in terms of eight less people who have died; eight less families who have gone through that traumatic experience than we had last year this time and to me, that's a success story."
Chief Evangelous said cracking down on felons with guns and seeking harsher sentences in court has helped reduce violent crime.
