PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A veterinarian visited a farm in Hampstead where rescued horses are now staying.
He examined their mouths and filed down their teeth.
Deputies seized the horses from a home near Surf City last week and charged the owners with animal cruelty.
Wednesday WECT was told one of the horses may have to be put down due to an illness that could be cancer.
The vet said the other horses are slowly recovering but have a long road ahead of them.
"From what I can see they're responding from what everyone here has told me," said Veterinarian Matthew Frazier. "They're body condition is improving very well. Improving their teeth will help them out as far as getting better nutrition."
The horses owners, Billy Joe Suttles, his wife Laura Westbrock, and his brother Larry Suttles will appear in court later this month.
