WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Rain didn't keep local law enforcement and firefighters from hitting the streets for a good cause Monday.

18 runners and one cyclists from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and Wilmington Police and Fire departments, carried the Special Olympics torch north on Highway 17 to the Pender County line.

They passed off the torch to representatives from the Pender Correctional Facility.

The torch run will end in Raleigh where the Special Olympics opening ceremonies will be held June 5.

Law Enforcement Torch Runs are held throughout the United States as an expression of the longstanding partnership between Special Olympics and the law enforcement community.
