NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - As of July, Chief Deputy Ed McMahon will serve as the New Hanover County Sheriff.
County commissioners voted unanimously to appoint McMahon Monday morning. He received support of current Sheriff Sid Causey in addition to the Democratic Party last month.
"Takes a lot of stress off," said McMahon. "It's so overwhelming. It is such an honor and privilege at the same time - big responsibilities. It's a good day."
McMahon will fill the rest of Causey's term when he retires next month and will be officially sworn in as sheriff June 30.
Causey said he decided to bow out in the middle of his 4-year term to take advantage of a retirement incentives package offered by the county as a way to cut the budget.
