Oak Island Pier re-opens

Posted by Laura Sinacori - email

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - Oak Island has officially re-opened it's most well-known pier.   A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Saturday morning on the Old Yaupon Pier, now called the Oak Island Pier.

Oak Island resident Kyle Thomas submitted pictures to WECT news. Mayor Johnnie Vereen and other town officials were on hand for the grand opening.

Hundreds toured the pier Saturday and Oak Island treated them to free hot dogs and a band. Crews also put in a new sand volleyball court next to the pier. Mayor Vereen says purchasing the pier is a huge accomplishment for the town.

"We've had a grand turnout," said Mayor Vereen. "We've saved another public access. We've done a fine job for preserving something that I consider historical for Oak Island."

Mayor Vereen says the restaurant located on the pier is expected to re-open sometime next month.
