NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County sheriff nominee Ed McMahon expects county commissioners to make a decision on who to appoint as sheriff Monday.
McMahon received the support of current Sheriff Sid Causey in addition to the support of the Democratic Party last month.
Chief Deputy McMahon, who has been with the Sheriff's Office for 21 years, is confident he will get to succeed Causey.
"I have four past sheriff's backing me, most of the department, I am dealing with the budget and the economic problems," said McMahon.
Sheriff Sid Causey will retire July 1. The 64-year-old sheriff said he decided to bow out in the middle of his 4-year term to take advantage of a retirement incentives package offered by the county as a way to cut the budget.
