WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Three Wilmington Police Officers were in Washington D.C. Wednesday after cycling nearly 1,000 miles.

The officers rode bikes as part of the Police Unity Tour to raise awareness for law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.

It is an annual ride to Washington for the start of National Observance of Police Memorial Week.

The tour began in Charleston, South Carolina where Wilmington Lieutenant George Perkins was accompanied by K-9 Officer Stafford Brister.

Sergeant Curt STansbury joined them on the tour in Virginia Beach.

While in DC, the officers will participate in several national events, including a ceremony at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
