COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A man is in jail after being accused of attacking the superintendent of Whiteville schools inside an area pharmacy.
34-year-old Elgin Tremayne Collier was arrested Wednesday morning and is facing charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury, and a misdemeanor count of assault on a school official.
About two months ago, Collier was banned from all Whiteville schools, including Central Middle School where his wife teaches and his son is a student.
Authorities say Collier was upset he couldn't go on campus and began beating 57-year-old Randall Shaver with a can of Red Bull inside a CVS Pharmacy. Police say Collier was yelling at Shaver saying, "You cant' tell me I can't go on campus to see my son."
Shaver was hit several times in the face and was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
School administrators stepped up security Wednesday because of the attack on Shaver.
School officials placed a partial lockdown on Central Middle School, Whiteville Primary School, and Edgewood Elementary School under Collier was apprehended by authorities.
