NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - People gathered in New Hanover County Tuesday night to remember victims of murder and drunk driving.

The New Hanover County family support group held the First Annual Celebration of Hope.

Pictures of victims line the wall of the district attorney's office, which sponsors the group.  It will provide a network for people who have lost a loved one.

Members are counseled through the legal process and learn from each other's experiences.

"Well what I have learned from them, there is no such thing as closure," said District Attorney Ben David.  "Some wounds never heal. What we do for them is get them legal closure, in terms of the emotional pain families deal with such as losing a child other families who has experienced similar tragedy are much better at helping these families cope."

One family member who took part in the event is Sharlene Pence who lost her son Danny in 1995.

"I do it to try and support others that have lost loved ones to show them that they are going to go forward," said Pence. "They are going to move on. It's not easy. It's the hardest thing to do, but you can."

The event was held at the First Baptist Church in Wilmington.

The celebration included music, scripture reading, and a video slide show of the victims.
