BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Brunswick County fugitive who was found in Central America last month, faced a judge in court Monday.

According to Brunswick County authorities, 40-year-old Brian Keith Perry failed to appear in court on the third day of his trial in December 2008.

The trial continued without him, and he was convicted by a jury of statutory rape, indecent liberties with a child, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Perry and his girlfriend, Christina Wooten who fled the US with Perry, were both arrested in Belize Saturday.

Wooten has been charged with accessory after the fact to statutory rape for assisting Perry in fleeing the jurisdiction in order to avoid punishment for his crimes.

Perry will face up to 44 years in prison for the rape conviction of a 13-year-old girl who was a friend of his daughter.
