LELAND, NC (WECT) - In an effort to reduce drug abuse and accidental overdoses, the Leland Police Department will accept outdated and unwanted prescription medications.
A prescription drop box is painted black and can be located inside the police department's lobby.
Citizens can drop off the prescriptions, and the medication will be safely disposed of by the Leland Police Department.
Old medications could be confused with current medications or children and pets could be poisoned by them.
Pills that are flushed go directly into the public water system, and throwing unwanted medications in the trash allows them to break down over time and leach into groundwater.
The Leland Police Department hopes to provide a safe and easy way for families to dispose of these medications before they fall into the wrong hands or improperly into our environment.
