Food for Fines drive at New Hanover Co. libraries

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County libraries will temporarily accept food donations in place of fines for overdue books.

Library workers say the program "Food for Fines" is a win-win situation for the library, people who check out books, and a local food pantry.

"We thought we could win this way for everyone," said Harry Tuchmayar with the New Hanover Co. library system.  "We get our material back. We clean up people's records, and we give something back to the community."

All of the donated food will be given to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.  Donations can be dropped off at the circulation desk of any New Hanover County library until May 30.
