WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hurricane season runs from June through November, and the Hurricane Hunter Aircraft was in Wilmington Thursday in an effort to promote hurricane awareness.

Scientists aboard the P-3 Orion Hurricane Hunter fly into hurricanes several times during a tropical event to gather information on the storm.  The data collected is used to better forecast the storms and intensity.

The plane is used for more than just meteorology, it is a public relations tool as well.

"You don't want to wait until a hurricane is bearing down on you, so the more people you can get out to educate, on what you need to do to be prepared in advance," said Dean Gulezian with the National Weather Service. "That's the whole purpose of bringing the plane out to see what it's all about."

Many people were at ILM to check out the aircraft in addition to other helicopters, planes, and booths that were on display.
