BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - After five weeks of being quarantined, dogs at the Brunswick County Animal Services Shelter can be adopted once again.
According to the Brunswick County Health Department, several dogs at the shelter developed a respiratory illness in March. Lab results confirmed the cause was distemper, a highly-contagious disease.
At least 17 dogs died from the outbreak and seven others were sick. In an effort to keep those numbers low, animal services halted dog adoption for more than a month.
As of May 5, all dogs at the Brunswick County Animal Services Shelter are well and available for adoption.
