WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Time is ticking for Wilmington city council members to come up with ways to make up for a $6,000,000 dollar short fall in their budget.
Friday, city staffers gave council members a copy of a proposed budget that included several cuts and recommendations.
Council member Margaret Haynes tells WECT, the city will not fill thirty-six vacant job openings, and the proposed budget may also affect city employee's 401 K plans. She says those things are being sacrificed in order to keep current employees from being layed off .
"We are not laying off anyone," said Haynes. "We are not furloughing anyone. Everyone with a city job will maintain that job."
City council members will have at least one public hearing before they approve a final budget.
