WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington resident is being featured in a national campaign promoting awareness of a devastating neuromuscular disease.

Charlie Lipari was selected by the muscular dystrophy association to promote awareness of Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS.  Lipari is a retired letter carrier who was diagnosed with ALS in 2001.

Lipari is 1 of 31 people featured throughout the month of May in the series "ALS Anyone's Life Story."

Throughout the past 8 years he has remained active with the muscular dystrophy association.

"Its touching," said Lipari.  "Sadly I met a lot of people that passed away I am carrying the legacy for them."

Charles feels fortunate that the disease has progressed slowly.
