WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The ribbon has been cut, and the doors are officially open at the Wilmington Police Department's new Southeastern division substation.

Members of the community watched and listened to Mayor Bill Saffo and Police Chief Ralph Evangelous speak about the new substation Saturday. The station is located on the corner of South College Road and Shipyard Boulevard.  Evangelous said he's excited about the new location.

"If we get a burglary in progress, and the units have to be at the main police station, the response time can be as much as 12 or 15 minutes," said Evangelous.  "Here we can almost be anywhere in a matter of two to three minutes. The response time is much quicker."

The building features a blast from the past theme, a sign from the old Wilmington police headquarters on Red Cross Street, and vintage Wilmington police pictures.
