WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Volunteers planted a garden Saturday to honor the life of William McDuffie.  McDuffie was the late president of the Hillcrest community in Wilmington.

To remember him, members from the Wilmington Housing Authority, Hillcrest residents and UNCW students, all planted the garden Saturday afternoon.

The community garden will be used to teach Hillcrest residents how to grow herbs, tomatoes, onions and other vegetables.  The organizer of the event said this is something Mr. McDuffie would have loved to have in the community.

"We have a lot of residents and a lot of children who are active and involved," said Danielle Aldrich an organizer. "Mr. McDuffie and I talked about it prior to him passing away. He was really supportive and he really supported the residents."

Aldrich and the residents of the Hillcrest community will maintain the garden and will check on it at least once a week.
