WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It amazes me how two of the community's largest volunteer involvement events can take place at the same time without taking anything away from each other.
That's what happened here in Wilmington last weekend. Relay for Life and Hands on Wilmington - two absolutely huge events.
Friday night into Saturday, approximately 4,000 people laced up their shoes to walk around a track. They walked more than just miles; they walked for a cause - to find a cure for cancer. They raised over $400,000 for research.
Saturday, over 2,500 people rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They sweated in the hot sun - not on their own property - but on 37 projects throughout the greater Wilmington area consisting of parks, schools and very deserving community service agencies.
These events had nothing to do with each other - but it is undeniable they both have one thing in common - a sincere desire to help each other - and make a difference. I salute the thousands who show the heart of a great community by volunteering in such a big way. You really do make a difference.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this subject, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
