Several Wilmington women receive achievement award

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The General Federation of Women's Clubs of NC has chosen several local women for the 2009 Woman of Achievement Award.

The GFWC of is the oldest volunteer organization in the state and has about 5,000 members and more than 150 clubs.

GFWC clubs gave more than $1.5 million and more than 400,000 volunteer service hours.

Awards were presented at the recent annual convention of the GFWC to a number of women from around the state.

Local honorees of the 2009 Women of Achievement include: Frances Weller, Margaret Weller-Stargell, Monica Caison, Phyllis Gorham, Caroyln Justice, and Rosemary DePaolo.

"It was truly an honor to be chosen for this distinctive award, and particularly to be in the company of so many extraordinary women from around North Carolina," said DePaolo in a statement. "I am continually astonished at the talent, intellect, commitment and dedication of the community of women leaders in this state."
