WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Southport man is facing charges in a traffic accident that took the life of a Burlington man Sunday night.

According to authorities, 31-year-old Stanley Torr Barnes was driving a motorcycle eastbound on Market Street when a westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee turned left onto Wilmington Avenue, into the path of the motorcycle.

Barnes was ejected from the bike.  He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he died later.

32-year-old Jason Albert Smith was driving the Jeep that hit the motorcycle and initially left the scene.  He did, however, return to the scene of the crash to turn himself in.
