More cases of laser strikes in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has reported another incident of multiple laser strikes in the Wilmington area.

Authorities say just before 10:30 Monday night, laser beams were being pointed towards the Sheriff Air 1 Helicopter in the area of 400 McQuillan Drive.

According to the NHCSO shining lasers towards emergency helicopters, which has the potential to cause reactions of startling, after imaging, or flash blinding.

Laser beams can present a threat to flight crew safety of a helicopter operating at night between 500 and 1,500 feet.

In North Carolina the use of a laser device towards an aircraft is punishable as a Class H Felony, where federal charges may be applied.

Just last week, a 14-year-old was charged with use of a laser device towards an aircraft with the Office of Juvenile Justice.

Earlier this year another man was charged with interference to a flight crew, for shining lasers towards the SABLE.
