BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Bald Head Island is hosting five wounded warriors and their families this weekend, to show thanks for their dedication to our country.
"It's about expressing our gratitude and appreciation back to those people," said resident John Fisher. "It feels great. That's the whole purpose."
Wounded warriors from the Marines, Navy, and Army arrived on the island Thursday and will spend the weekend in homes donated by residents.
"It's been good - nice and relaxing," said George Paniagua from the Marines. "All the amenities they have here is excellent. It's a great getaway with the family.
The warriors were treated to various activities like kayaking and fishing. Friday afternoon they toured the island in trams and climbed the Old Baldy Lighthouse.
"The highlight has been how friendly and how amazing the entire community is here," said Kyle Barnum from the Navy. "How they've been treating us - it's just been so incredible."
As family members look at Brunswick County from the Old Baldy Lighthouse, they hope this is one memory they can hang on to and forget what happened on sands thousands of miles away.
This is the second year the community has hosted wounded warriors, and the event will likely become an annual tradition.
