Driving distractions in Wilmington

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - In 2008 Wilmington had the second highest number of accidents in the state.

WECT teamed up with retired NC State Trooper L.C. Dechent to see just how bad things really are.  Though he no longer has the authority to hand out tickets, he did point out drivers that he would gladly give one to.

The biggest problem with poor driving is the fact that drivers are just not paying attention.  You have heard of the effects of driving under the influence, but what about driving while putting on makeup or eating french fries?

Fast food and fast cars don't always mix - last month at least one driver crashed her car on MLK Parkway while eating and driving.

While drivers not being attentive is bad, Dechent said he thinks it should be illegal for motorists to act aggressively because they are distracted by their cell phones.

"What I notice riding around town is when people answer their phones they drop 5-10 mph below the speed limit," said Dechent.  "They are more interested in talking on their cell phones than anything else."

The accident rate is not likely to improve unless motorists start paying attention.
